Where it all began
Field research was conducted during a six-day visit to Baliapal (Odisha) where a cluster of women artisans were visited to understand the process of manufacturing and to gain insights of the constrains and challenges faced by artisans. It is known for its rich agriculture and Sabai grass craft. This eco-friendly material supports local artisans, especially women, through intricate weaving.
About
Sabai grass weaving is an integral part of the craft traditions in agrarian regions of Odisha, India. Artisans use this durable and eco-friendly grass to create ropes, baskets, mats, and home décor items. The products are known for their intricate weaving patterns, sustainability, and versatility, making them both functional and decorative.
Efforts to revive Sabai grass weaving focus on blending traditional techniques with innovative designs.
Inspiration leads to
Ideation
We had a constraint to work around wall baskets, so we focused more on patterns rather than form. We enjoyed taking walks there, but the most intriguing sight was the crabs that emerged in the evening, creating fascinating patterns with their movements before the morning waves washed them away and left sand with veins.
Prototyping
Collect locally available Sabai grass and dried Khajur Patta. Remove the hard middle stem from the leaves.
Wrap a thin bunch of Sabai grass with Khajur Patta and secure it layer by layer using a needle.
Wrap cotton thread around the structure to create intricate patterns and strengthen the product.
With patience and skill, the product takes shape, showcasing traditional craftsmanship and sustainable design.
